When to switch to winter tyres in Estonia: law and practical timing

Updated 2026-07-03

Estonian law sets the minimum requirements for winter tyre use, but the right moment to change over depends on actual weather rather than the calendar alone. Summer tyre compounds harden in the cold and lose grip well before the first snow. Here is what the law requires and when a changeover makes sense in practice.

What Estonian law requires

Winter tyres are mandatory in Estonia from 1 December to 1 March. The period can be extended by decree depending on road conditions, so it is worth checking the current requirement in a given year.

Studded tyres are allowed from 15 October to 31 March, and this window can also be extended if roads stay icy.

The minimum tread depth is 3 mm for winter tyres during the winter period and 1.6 mm for summer tyres. A winter tyre worn below 3 mm no longer meets the winter-period requirement, even if it is marked as a winter tyre.

When to change over in practice

A common rule of thumb is to fit winter tyres once the daily average temperature stays below about +7 °C. Below that, a summer tyre compound stiffens and braking distances grow even on dry roads. On the first frosty or snowy morning, summer tyres are already clearly unsafe.

Do not leave the changeover to the last moment: workshop queues fill up quickly with the first snow. Booking in October or early November is sensible — you can reserve a tyre-change slot at the Rehviparadiis workshop via the /service page. In spring, switch back to summer tyres once night frosts have passed; studded tyres may not be used after 31 March unless the period has been extended.

Frequently asked questions

When are winter tyres mandatory in Estonia?
Winter tyres are mandatory in Estonia from 1 December to 1 March. The period can be extended by decree if road conditions demand it, for example after an early or unusually long winter. The obligation follows the calendar, not the weather: even in a snow-free December, winter tyres must be fitted. In practice it is wise to change earlier, once temperatures stay below about +7 °C.
Can I still drive on summer tyres in November?
Legally yes, because the winter tyre obligation starts on 1 December. In practice it is risky: November in Estonia often brings night frost, hoar and the first snow, and the hard compound of a summer tyre gives poor grip on cold roads. If morning temperatures are near zero, it is safer to fit winter tyres early rather than wait for the date.
What is the minimum tread depth for winter tyres?
During the winter period, winter tyres must have at least 3 mm of tread; the minimum for summer tyres is 1.6 mm. Safety-wise, 3 mm is already a limit at which snow and wet grip have noticeably deteriorated, which is why many tyre manufacturers recommend replacing a winter tyre at around 4 mm. Tread depth is easy to check with an inexpensive gauge or at any tyre workshop.
When are studded tyres allowed in Estonia?
Studded tyres are allowed in Estonia from 15 October to 31 March, and the window can be extended by decree if icy conditions persist. That means you may fit studs a month and a half before the winter tyre obligation begins, which is sensible if early-morning roads are already icy. After the permitted period ends, studded tyres must come off; studless winter tyres may legally be used year-round.
